Homemade street tacos are pretty much a staple in my diet on a weekly basis. In order to keep things interesting, I'm always looking for updated salsa recipes to compliment the flavors of the fish or meat, especially ones that aren't tomato based. By swapping tomatoes for mango's, a cool summertime salsa is created - the sweetness of the mango and heat from the jalapeno marry perfectly with the crunch of the cucumber. And while salsa only gets better the longer it has to marinate the flavors together, it tends to disappear just as soon as the bowl hits the table.
1 mango, peeled and diced
1/2 cup diced cucumber
1 tbsp finely chopped jalapeno
1/3 cup diced red onion
3 tbsp lime juice
1/3 cup roughly cut cilantro leaves
salt & pepper, to taste
Directions: Combine mango, cucumber, jalapeno, red onion, lime juice, and cilantro leaves and mix well. Season with salt & pepper, to taste.

Santa Cruz weekends as relaxing as this past one are far and few between - dinners on the grill, a beachy street fair and wine my dear Laura & our moms. All that was really needed was a pair of sunglasses, which brought an even bigger smile to my face.
1. My mom sipping a Colorado Bulldog at The Crow's Nest
2. Discovering It's Wine Tyme - a dog friendly wine bar in the heart of Capitola Village
3. Enjoying my beach boys

How genius is this - a farmer's market tote! It's big enough to hold all of your market finds yet light enough to not weigh you down and even has holes at the bottom to let those veggies and fruit breath. Functionality aside, this bag itself simply darling. Everything I could want in a Summertime tote.

With the exception of dinner with my dad and happy hour with friends a better part of the weekend was spent at home watching Season 2 of Arrested Development with S and Ziggy. I have to admit I loved every lazy moment of it. The past few weeks have been busy and equally exhausting with no signs of letting up in the near future so it was a treat to slow things down a bit and just relax.
1. My dad's birthday gift to me - an Apple TV. I can edit photos on the big screen now.
2. Adding a pinch of sea salt on pretty much anything is better
3. Rounding off a lazy weekend with take out from my favorite Tony's Pizza. Heavenly.

The last few weeks I've been a little off from my usual self. I know that things can't and won't always go my way, but it feels especially so lately. However, last night I had a change in perspective when I attended a fundraiser for a coworker who is running her first Half Marathon proceeds going towards the cure for Crohn's and Colitis, which is something that personally affects her. Seeing this type of dedication is touching and reminded me I have so much to be thankful for - great family, friends, job, my health, love and Ziggy. It's important to stay focused on the positive in front of you rather than dwell on the little things that pass you by. From the disappointments will eventually come the realization that there's something better right around the corner.

June gloom really set in on the California coast this weekend. Although I hear the heat was sweltering inland, the sun didn't come out from behind the clouds even for a moment in Santa Cruz.. Overcast weather aside, my mom still helped me stretch out the last little bits of my birthday celebration (I so appreciate how my mom is an enabler to my ridiculous month-long party) with dinner in the Rock Room on Friday (and again on Saturday), stocking up for the week at the Farmers Market and brunch with my dear friend, Laura, and her mom. The only thing missing from the weekend was my sunshine.
1. The only sunshine I did see this weekend - beautiful Driscoll's sunshine raspberries!
2. The enchanting view from the Rock Room
3. A hot pink lip to brighten up an otherwise gloomy day.

Full transparency, this was actually my second attempt at this recipe. While it is fairly simple to assemble, it all comes down to the balsamic reduction. During my first trial, I failed to let the balsamic reduce into a syrup and ended up submerging the watermelon in a pool of balsamic. Not good. The balsamic infused in the watermelon and in turn, the taste was overwhelming. You know, the sharp feeling when you encounter something too sour and pucker up like Renee Zellweger? That bad.
Anyway this time, with some patience, I drizzled the balsamic reduction over the top of the watermelon, topped with crumbled feta and garnished with mint. The result was exactly what I had originally anticipated - simple & sweet.
1/4 cup of balsamic vinegar
1 tbsp of sugar
1 seedless watermelon, sliced
4 oz of feta cheese
mint, to garnish
Directions: In a small sauce pan, whisk together the balsamic vinegar and sugar. Cook over medium heat, until reduced (a syrupy consistency), about 4 minutes. Next, drizzle the balsamic reduction over watermelon. Sprinkle with feta cheese and mint. Serve immediately.

Chloé leather heels / Rachel Zoe camel shoes / Geé WaWa leather flat / Bottega Veneta brown heels / Fergie small heel shoes / H&M snake print shoes, $20
Sooo, I may be losing my mind. For the last week or so I've been scouring my closet in search of my favorite pair of brown leather sandals. Vivid in my mind, they're simple with one strap over the toes with another around the ankle in smooth leather. Devastated over the loss of the perfect summer sandals, I'm now beginning to come to terms with the fact they are gone, no where to be found. That, or said shoes mentioned (in great detail) above are merely an illusion in my mind. Either way there's a silver lining to everything, now I get to shop.

Each birthday, I like to take a moment to reflect on the year's event. At this time last year, I was enjoying life with good friends, special time with family and overall feeling happy about the life I've built in San Francisco. I realize now this was the first time I felt truly content with myself, who I was becoming and where my life was heading. Little did I know just a couple weeks later, I was about to meet S, fall in love and he would end up moving out to San Francisco where we now live together. Today at 32, I'm the happiest I've ever been. Not all aspects of life are perfect, but I have faith everything works out the way it should in time. It's so crazy how life can change in just one year. I look forward to what's to come next.
1. Enjoying sweet watermelon on a hot day at the park.
2. June 1st marked the beginning of my month long juice cleanse. Wish me luck!
3. An early morning walk down to the beach with S & Ziggy - enough to make any day better.
